Impact Hub member, graphic designer, Australian... & now, furniture mover. What other hats will Matt Hocking add to his eclectic wardrobe this year?
Q: Who are you? Introduce yourself as you would at a dinner party...
A: This is how I introduce myself at dinner parties.
Me: "Hi, I am Matt."
Response: "You have an accent? Are you Australian?"
Me: "Yes, I am Australian."
Response: "I'd love to go to Australia, but the plane ride is too long and I'm scared of sharks and spiders."
Me: "Well, I got here in one piece (on a plane), and the sharks and spiders aren't that bad - unless of course, they bite you. Then you're f#$%ked."
Q: What is your background? How does it differ from what you are doing now?
A: My background is in Graphic Design, but I've always considered myself more of an 'ideas guy' - whatever that means. Today, I still do the UX/UI stuff for my startup, but now I wear a few more hats, and in my down time I help move furniture...
Q: What are you working on right now?
A: Ghostruck. Everyone is familiar with rideshare for people. Well, we do rideshare for your stuff. We move your stuff from A to B, now on your smartphone, with an empty truck already going the same way.
I've also been working on growing a massive beard. Working in a trucking startup, it just seemed appropriate :)
Q: Why did you join Impact Hub?
A: Lindsey and Brian made me do it! I love networking with like-minded and inspiring people.
Q: How do you make money?
A: At present I don't. In the future I'm hoping that changes :)
Q: What is something that really excites you right now (a trend, life development, time of year, food, etc)?
A: I'm excited by Pioneer Square. Since moving here from New York, it's been both where I lived and worked for the last two years. I've loved watching an injection of new businesses, bars, restaurants and residents transform it from a tired and run-down tourist trap to a place that I don't want to leave on weekends.
Q: You have $10M to spend in the next year, and you can’t spend it on you, your friends or your family. How do you spend it?
A: I'd invest $10M dollars to hurry up and get the Viaduct down before it falls down. I'm seriously scared to drive my car on that thing and I really want to see how the new waterfront project comes together.
Q: What’s on the horizon for you?
A: On a personal front, I'm getting married to my beautiful fiancé in August, which is super exciting! Career wise, Ghostruck is up and running and we are seeing a great response to our concept. We are looking to take the idea national over the next year all things going well.
Q: Where do you usually hang out when you are at Impact Hub? How often are you here?
A: I'm usually downstairs when I'm at Impact Hub in the main room. Love the high ceilings and the open space. Also love sitting on tables with people I don't know and hearing what they are interested in.
Two questions that we ask every member...
Q: What is something we don’t know?
A: That whenever you need a truck, about 30% of the trucks on the road (including the ones driving past you) are completely empty.
Q: Give us your top three Seattle gems!
A: Hooverville for drinks. Second Use in SoDo to decorate your pad, and SUP in Ballard for fun.
